REVISED SSO RATES FOR DENTAL SERVICES

As a member of the Swiss Dental Association (SSO), we bill for our services according to the SSO rates system.
The rates for dentistry include over 500 individual services. A certain number of tax points is assigned to each service. The number of tax points is multiplied by the tax point value to give the price of the individual service.

After more than two decades, the existing SSO rates for dental services no longer reflected the current state of modern dentistry in many cases. The Swiss Dental Association (SSO) and its accident insurance (AI), military insurance (MI) and disability insurance (DI) collective bargaining partners signed off the revised rates for dental services in Bern on 3 May 2017. This makes the billing process more transparent for patients and insurer providers alike. The revised rates now include figures that correctly reflect the range of services that modern dentistry has to offer.

The recalculation includes partial compensation for the increased costs in practice since this date. However, this adjustment affects the AI, MI and DI social security sector, which accounts for approximately 2 to 3% of total dental costs in Switzerland.

The existing rates will continue to apply to treatments covered by health insurance for the time being. So the revised rates will not have any impact on the development of health insurance premiums.

What does this mean for you as a patient?

The prices for dental services are not greatly affected. While individual services will become slightly more expensive, modern techniques mean many services may be provided faster and at a lower cost.

The cost of dental cleaning performed by a dental hygienist has remained unchanged since 1994. The revised Swiss rates for dental services, which will come into force on 1 January 2018, will significantly increase prices for dental cleaning.
